When you are in a retirement residence, you or your adult children may be eligible to deduct a portion of, or all of the living costs as a medical expense on their tax return. You are encouraged you to contact your own tax advisor to learn more.

VETERANS BENEFITS

Veterans may be eligible to receive assistance from Veterans Affairs Canada to help defray the cost of assisted living, in-home health care or other non-reimbursed medical care. Note that eligibility requirements are related to past military service and the level of care required.

You may be able tosell or convert life insurance policies to apply to the cost of senior living.

Real estate can also offer a source of funding, whether through the sale of a home, a home equity loan or a guaranteed income for life program.
